My Morning Routine

Are you a morning person? Me neither. Nothing is worse than having to wake up early. Unless you have something to look forward to… like Christmas morning!

I have always been a night owl. Even as a kid! But on Christmas Eve I would set my alarm EARLY because I was so excited to finally give and open gifts.

What if you had something like Christmas morning to look forward to every day?

That’s the idea behind my morning routine. I’m not opening or giving any gifts, but I am actually excited to get out of bed and begin my routine each morning.

Sounds crazy, I know. But I’ll walk you through my morning routine and give you tips on how to create a morning routine you can get obsessed with. ✧°・*

My Morning Routine

  1. Wake Up
  2. Make Tea
  3. Yoga
  4. Drink Tea
  5. Breakfast
  6. Shower, Outfit, Hair & Makeup

Before I go into each part of my routine in detail, I would like to point out that I don’t live in some fairy tale life where I can spend hours each morning slowly waking up every single day. Sometimes I can, sometimes I can’t. My morning routine can be as short as 30 minutes or as long as 2 hours. I’m pretty flexible with my routine and adjust it as needed.

#1: Wake Up

When I wake up, I linger in bed for a little bit. I’m all wrapped up in my warm little blanket cocoon and it’s just perfect. Can you blame me?! So this is when I look at my phone so I can feel sort of productive without having to leave my blanket burrito.

I’ll check my texts and push notifications to make sure any major catastrophes haven’t struck or anything. I also like to check the weather so that I can start thinking about what I want to wear and how to do my hair. But I make sure to avoid anything that will “suck me in”, like social media!

When I’m ready, I emerge from my blanket cocoon and really begin my day.

#2: Make Tea

I used to be one of those people that couldn’t function without coffee. And then I became one of those people that couldn’t function without a couple of shots of espresso in my coffee.

I loved having something delicious to drink every morning that also helped me to feel less groggy. Sort of. I was using excessive caffeine to make up for the sleep I wasn’t getting. I knew my caffeine habit wasn’t healthy on SO many levels.

So I finally made the switch to tea because I really like having something yummy to drink in the morning. It makes mornings less crappy because it’s something I look forward to. And some mornings, my tea doesn’t even have caffeine in it! It depends on what I’m craving or how I’m feeling that morning.

Usually my go-to morning drink is organic green tea and sometimes I’ll add a tiny spoonful (~1/2 teaspoon or less) of raw honey (Aldi brand) and a tiny bit of juice from a lemon wedge if I have some. Other teas I enjoy drinking are:

I brew the tea, but I don’t drink it right away because I like to enjoy the aroma while I practice yoga and I like my tea to cool off a bit.

#3: Yoga

If tea is like a stocking stuffer gift in the metaphor of my morning routine being like Christmas morning, then yoga is like a pony with a great big bow waiting next to the Christmas tree. Or a new car. I’m not choosy. ;D

Yoga in the morning is AMAZING! I get to gently stretch my muscles and wake my body up. For me, yoga is also “me” time. I try my best to be fully present in the moment, noticing and appreciating each sensation in my body. I like to end my yoga practice with a little meditation, too.

Sometimes my yoga routine will be as short as 10 minutes, or as long as 30 minutes. I usually practice a free form Vinyasa flow, and ease into the poses that I feel my body needs.

When I’m all done, I feel completely relaxed yet energized at the same time. It’s amazing and I love starting my day this way!

#4: Drink Tea

By now my tea has finally cooled off. And if I’m lucky, it has even gotten cold (not sarcasm; I’m weird and I prefer cold drinks).

I try to let my “me time” continue into my tea time. I like to sit down on my balcony or sit at the bay window and enjoy my tea. I have a hummingbird feeder and they come by quite often, so I like to watch them zoom around as I relax. They are truly magical little beings. ♡

Sometimes I’ll listen to the songbirds and watch them flutter around. Once a mama hawk made her nest in a palm tree by our apartment, so I would watch and listen to her every so often. I like to watch the honeybees collect pollen, and little lizard guys come out from their hiding places. I try to observe and appreciate all of the beauty in nature around me.

If I don’t look outside, I’ll check on all my indoor plants and see how they’re doing. I’m a crazy plant lady, so checking in on my plants makes me feel calm and brings me joy. ♡

#5: Breakfast

Sometimes I’ll eat my breakfast with my tea. Sometimes I will finish my tea before I even begin to make breakfast. Sometimes breakfast is a granola bar. Sometimes it’s a potato bacon egg and cheese burrito. But usually it’s a fruit and veggie smoothie.

Smoothies have become an important part of my morning routine and I try to have one whenever I can. I like to begin my day giving my body the best fuel I can: physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually. It sets the foundation for a great day!

It all depends on how much time I have, and what I’m feeling that morning. Like I said, my morning routine is pretty flexible.

If I’m really crunched for time, I’ll pack my tea to go and grab a granola bar instead. My favorite are Clif Protein Bars, especially the chocolate chip or crunchy peanut butter ones. They are surprisingly filling for a granola bar, and equally surprising, they keep me full for longer than I would expect from a granola bar. Plus I really like how they taste!

#6: Shower, Outfit, Hair & Makeup

I lumped all of these together because I don’t really have much to say about each of them individually.

Once I finish my breakfast, I get in the shower. While I’m there, I recall the weather for the day and resume brainstorming outfit ideas. When I’m done, I get dressed, do my hair, and (almost never) put makeup on.

I’m really laid back when it comes to my appearance. I usually wear my hair down, unstyled, in a top knot bun, or braided off to the side. If I’m going the extra step, I might flat iron or style my bangs (fringe). I wear makeup almost never, unless I’m going to a special event. In that case, I’ll wear a little bit of eyeliner, mascara, and sometimes concealer to make it look like I don’t have bags under my eyes. I’m honestly next to clueless when it comes to makeup and styling my hair, so I take the “less is more” approach.

I also try to brush my teeth after I eat breakfast so that I don’t start my day with bits of food stuck in my teeth! But if I’m taking my breakfast and tea to go, I make sure I bring some gum and quickly check my teeth for stuck food in the mirror before I leave the car.

And that’s it! That’s my morning routine in a nutshell! Now let’s talk about you, and how you can plan out your perfect morning routine!

How To Plan Your Perfect Morning Routine

To craft your perfect morning routine, I’ve got a handy little printable that you can use to walk you through the process! You can find the download link at the bottom of this article. If you don’t feel like printing it out, I’ll walk you through the method here, too!

In my opinion, there are 2 main ingredients in the perfect morning routine:

  1. Nonnegotiable things that you MUST do
  2. Fun things that you don’t have to do, but look forward to them so much that you prioritize them like nonnegotiables.

Begin by thinking about all the things that you HAVE to do before you can leave the house for the day. What are they? Is there a specific order that you do them? About how long does it take you to do each thing?

Now think about your ideal morning. What would your perfect morning look like? What exactly makes it so perfect? Think about specific things that you can look forward to doing each morning.

Did you notice how I started with the things I loved, and saved the nonnegotiables for last? Doing the things I love first helps to put me in a great mood as soon as I wake up. If I started with things I had to do, I would honestly probably skip tea and yoga. I would think to myself “Well, I’m already ready to leave, so what’s the point?”

But that doesn’t mean you have to put all the fun stuff first! You could use your commute to put you in a good mood. You could use that time to listen to a motivating podcast, an audio book, or your happy & energized morning playlist! The key here is to pick something so exciting that you can’t WAIT to do it every morning.

The most important thing is to be reasonable when adding happy things to your morning routine. Do not add a million fun things to your morning routine. You will get burnt out or overwhelmed and end up skipping most or all of them. Start with one or two simple things that you can honestly look forward to.

After a week of trying your ideal morning routine, if you find that one or two things are working well but you crave a little more… try adding one or two more! Or if you find that you’re actually not so excited to do the things you planned… remove them from your routine and try adding something different!
